Locked away in a North Hollywood studio, far from the rays of the sun that shines this beautiful January day, the members of Angelrage gave us a little insight on the state of the band and their music... Michael, Raphael, Uriel, and Gabriel have all finished the basic tracks for the new Fight The Devil. The vocals are not in the mix yet but what I heard blew me away! This is not the Fight The Devil that went #1 3 times last year on the MP3.com International Chrstian Metal charts. This is something entirely new. Founding member Raphael explains, "We didn't want to just recreate what we had already done, so I didn't want to do it unless we could add something, maybe update it a bit. To that end, we slowed it down a bit, added a second guitar tuned down to drop C, which adds a lot of depth, and we are still messing around with keyboards and samples." The production is very in-your-face, and sounds, in a word, brutal. But the biggest change, say the band, will come courtesy of Michael, who seems determined to remake the song in his own image. "I sing in a different style than Raphael does. The biggest challenge, he says, aside from getting flack from fans for deliberately changing a song some call a classic, is to adapt his style to the song. "I definitely did not want to imitate at all, and I also wanted to bring the song kicking and screaming into the new millenium, because we all felt the original sounds very dated. It should, it was recorded in 1995. So the focus was to deconstruct it, reimagine the song and do it like we would now." The new track will be released as a CD single. |
